Why organize a mountain school trip to the Salève?

Often nicknamed the balcony of Geneva, the Salève is a unique natural site and an ideal setting for educational outings. From its summit, students can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of Lake Geneva, the city of Geneva and the Alps mountain range.

Beyond the spectacular scenery, the Salève is above all a fantastic place to introduce children to nature and the environment. Mountain landscapes provide an opportunity to explore many themes related to school curricula, such as biodiversity, geography, landscape formation and respect for ecosystems.

Thanks to the cable car, access to the summit is quick and safe, making the mountain easily accessible even for younger children. In just a few minutes, students move from an urban environment to a preserved natural area that encourages observation and discovery.

This immersion in nature promotes experiential learning. Children observe, explore, ask questions and develop their sense of curiosity while sharing a meaningful experience with their class.

Half-day programme

The school outing lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes and combines guided activities with independent exploration.

The half-day begins with a cable car ride to the summit of the Salève. This moment is often a highlight for students, who gradually discover the landscape as they gain altitude.

Once at the top, the children take part in an educational activity led by the educators from the Maison du Salève. For around 45 minutes to one hour, they explore different aspects of nature and the landscape through interactive activities adapted to their age.

After a short break, the students continue their exploration with Nature Challenges (Défis Nature), a self-guided activity designed to encourage observation and teamwork. Working in small groups, they solve riddles and take on various challenges related to the surrounding environment.

This structure allows a balance between learning, observation and play, helping to keep children engaged throughout the visit.

Educational activities for children

The activities are designed for children aged 3 to 11 and can be adapted depending on the age of the students and the educational objectives of the group.

Led by the Maison du Salève, these activities help children discover nature and landscapes in a fun and interactive way.

Chamois and Friends
Children discover the animals that live on the Salève. Through games and observation, they learn to recognize different species and understand how they live in their natural habitat.

A Tree as a Friend
This activity invites students to explore the world of trees. They learn about their role within ecosystems and how to identify some of the species growing on the mountain.

Landscape Through the Senses
Children observe mountains, valleys and landforms to better understand how landscapes are shaped and how they evolve over time.

All Roads Lead to the Salève
This activity explores the history of the massif, its trails and the different ways humans interact with and use this natural environment.

These activities help develop key skills such as observation, environmental awareness and understanding of natural ecosystems.

Discover the wildlife and plants of the Salève

The Salève is home to a rich and diverse biodiversity. During a school outing, students may observe many species typical of mountain environments.

In terms of wildlife, it is not uncommon to spot chamois, an iconic animal of the region. The massif is also home to several birds of prey such as buzzards and falcons, often seen soaring above the cliffs. Meadows and forest edges also host many insects and butterflies, especially active in spring and summer.

The plant life of the Salève is just as remarkable. Children can discover different tree species such as firs and spruces, as well as a wide variety of wild plants and flowers. Depending on the season, it is possible to see wild orchids, gentians and other alpine flowers colouring the mountain meadows.

These observations help students understand the concept of biodiversity and raise awareness about the fragility of mountain ecosystems.

To extend the experience, students take part in the Nature Challenges (Défis Nature) activity, designed to encourage exploration and teamwork.

Each class receives several booklets containing riddles, questions and challenges related to the surrounding environment. Children must carefully observe nature to find the answers, whether it is identifying plants, recognizing landscapes or understanding natural phenomena.

This activity encourages active learning and helps develop team spirit. Students work together, share ideas and learn to observe nature more closely.

Accompanying adults also receive an explanatory guide to help support the children throughout the activity.
